Timo Werner ‘refuses’ to play for RB Leipzig ahead of Chelsea transfer

News Timo Werner ‘refuses’ to play for RB Leipzig ahead of Chelsea transfer

RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff says he has received no contact from Liverpool or Bayern Munich regarding Timo Werner.

Chelsea transfer target Timo Werner has reportedly refused to play for RB Leipzig in the Champions League when it returns.

The Blues are believed to have agreed a deal in principle to sign the Germany international after triggering his £54million release clause.

While the transfer has not yet been finalised with the player unable to travel to complete a medical, it seems only a matter of time.

Werner has been instrumental in helping Leipzig challenge for the Bundesliga title this season and in reaching the Champions League quarter-final.

But, according to German outlet Bild , he will refuse to play any further part in their European journey because he wants to be in London in July.

Leipzig beat Tottenham in the last-16 before the coronavirus outbreak and would have been confident of progressing further with Werner in the team.

The Bundesliga was the first league to return to action and will be completed in the next couple of weeks with only four more match days remaining.

The Champions League is set to be concluded with a mini-tournament in Portugal in August when all the other European leagues have been concluded.

Werner’s prospective new club have it all to do in their last-16 tie after losing 3-0 at home to Bayern Munich in the first leg at Stamford Bridge.

The German has bagged 25 goals in 31 Bundesliga appearances this season but would not be eligible to play for the Blues in that game if a transfer is confirmed.

Meanwhile, Chelsea put seven past QPR in their latest friendly before this week’s Premier League restart.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Billy Gilmour scored twice, with Mason Mount, Willian and Olivier Giroud also netting in the 7-1 win.

Frank Lampard ’s men travel to Aston Villa on Sunday in their first top flight game back as they look to cement their top four spot.

The Blues are just three points above fifth-placed Manchester United with nine games remaining.
