News Kaduna governor meets monarchs, others over Kajuru killings

Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai

The Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Umaru Muri, has said some of the people behind the killings in the Kajuru Local Government Area, Southern Kaduna, have been arrested.

Muri made the disclosure after a meeting between the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, security chiefs, Adara and Fulani leaders over the incessant attacks in Kajuru on Wednesday.

Violent attacks in several communities in Kajuru have resulted in the loss of many lives.

The latest attacks in the LGA claimed 27 lives in Gonar-Rogo, Idanu and Makyali, according to the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union.

But the police claimed 15 people were killed, with five sustaining varying degrees of injury.

The Speaker, Kaduna State House of Assembly, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan; and representative of the Chikun/Kajuru in the House of Representatives, Umar Barde, also attended the meeting chaired by El-Rufai at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House in Kaduna.

Muri, who spoke to journalists after the meeting, however, refused to disclose how many suspects were arrested, but warned against reprisals.

The CP said, “Reprisals cannot solve the problem and all concerned should desist from it. Both the Adara and Fulani have been warned not to take the law into their own hands.

“We made some arrests, I can’t tell the exact number. But we made arrests over the recent incident in the Kajuru community.”

Barde stressed the need for peaceful coexistence among the people of the area.

Meanwhile, the Northern Christian Elders Forum in Kaduna State has condemned the incessant attacks on Kajuru and other parts of the state.

The body expressed concern over the security issues despite the lockdown following the outbreak of coronavirus in the state.

The group made its position known in a statement.

The NOSCEF said, “It is with great sadness and concern that we the Northern States Christian Elders Forum, Kaduna State chapter, join hands with all men and women of good and reasonable conscience in this state and country to call on the authorities concerned to arise and check the growing insecurity in our state and country where innocent and law-abiding citizens are being killed ceaselessly.

“The killings in the Kajuru, Birnin Gwari and Giwa local governments and the surrounding environs, banditry, armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes are becoming very unacceptable.”
